Buying a used car in WA? The free licence check doesn't show finance owing, write-off history, or stolen status. Before you buy, do the official $2 PPSR vehicle search at ppsr.gov.au — if the previous owner still owes money on the car, the lender could repossess it from you.
WA rego check FAQs
Is the WA vehicle licence check free?
Yes. The WA Government provides the vehicle licence (rego) status check free of charge.
Why is it called a "vehicle licence" and not registration?
Western Australia uses the term "vehicle licence" where other states say "registration" — they mean the same thing: the legal permission for the vehicle to be driven on public roads.
Can I check a car registered in another state?
No — the WA check only covers WA-licensed vehicles. Use the portal of the state where the vehicle is registered (for example, VicRoads for Victorian plates).
Will it show me the owner's name?
No. WA does not disclose the vehicle licence holder's identity through the public check — this is consistent across all of Australia.
