Buying a used car in Victoria? The free VicRoads check won't reveal finance owing, write-off history, or stolen status. Before you buy, do the official $2 PPSR vehicle search at ppsr.gov.au — it can save you from buying a car a lender can repossess.
VIC rego check FAQs
Is the VicRoads rego check free?
Yes. VicRoads provides the registration check as a free online service. Never pay a third-party site for what VicRoads gives you free.
Can I check using the VIN instead of the plate number?
Yes. VicRoads lets you search by registration number, VIN, or chassis number — handy if the plates have been removed or you're checking a vehicle from a listing that only shows the VIN.
Will it show me who owns the vehicle?
No. Like every Australian state, Victoria does not disclose the registered owner's identity through any public check. If a seller won't show you proof the vehicle is registered in their name (for example, in their myVicRoads account), walk away.
What if the car has interstate plates?
Use the portal of the state where the vehicle is registered. A NSW-plated car is checked on Service NSW, even if you're standing in Melbourne — see our NSW guide.
